Welcome to RE FIRE! We create up-cycled products out of used fire hose and fire turnout gear that has reached the end of its useful life and is slated for the landfill.
My name is Kelvin Cornelssen and I am an active firefighter of 17 years. RE FIRE is my creation, combining a passion for all things fire related with a desire to re-purpose material that has more life to live.
Greatly assisted by my wife Tracey, our process includes washing and disassembling our raw material, and creating new patterns and product by hand in our home studio in Vancouver, British Columbia. Every piece is unique - inspired by the material that we start with. Everything possibly salvaged from the gear finds a home in our new pieces, including zippers, clasps, pockets and reflective banding. Existing details are often the inspiration for our work.
We are community minded folks and have donated our belts and bags to support a number of causes. RE FIRE has committed to donating a minimum of 2% of proceeds to the British Columbia Professional Firefighter’s Burn Fund – an organization doing great things - including hosting Young Burn Survivors' Camp every July. Almost eight hundred children from across B.C. between the ages of six to 18 have attended since 1994. For more on the BCPFBF see www.burnfund.org.
